Tom Sachs Unveils Captivating Faux Chanel Boutique in Soho

By Editor • September 12, 2026 • 2 min read

In a bold and humorous artistic endeavor, renowned artist Tom Sachs has transformed a space on Centre Street in New York City into a playful homage to Chanel. The installation, titled 31 Rue Cambon, showcases a mock boutique crafted from unexpected materials, blurring the lines between art and fashion.

In collaboration with fashion historian Colby Mugrabi, Sachs has created an immersive experience that evokes the iconic Parisian Chanel store. Rather than traditional luxury garments, visitors will find dresses sculpted from plywood, designed to mimic the textures of tweed and other luxurious fabrics. Accessories, including a reinterpretation of the classic flap bag, are fabricated from everyday materials like Legos, presenting a cheeky critique of consumer culture.

Art Meets Fashion in a Subversive Display

Sachs, during a preview, described every piece in the exhibition as a sculpture, emphasizing the artistic nature of the work. "The clothes—you can’t wear them. They’re sculptures in the spirit of Claes Oldenburg’s The Store from 1961," he remarked, highlighting the installation’s commentary on the absurdity of luxury goods. Mugrabi added insight into the project, noting the importance of window dressing in luxury retail, suggesting that the exterior experience is as vital as the interior.

A Celebration of Iconic Femininity

The exhibition pays tribute to a range of cultural icons, with dresses inspired by figures such as Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Diana, and Sofia Coppola. Sachs expressed that the project stemmed from a personal longing for a Chanel piece, ignited by an image of Taylor. His creative process involved meticulous craftsmanship to recreate these celebrated designs, often incorporating layers of paint to achieve the desired textures and details.

Opening to the public on September 11, 2026, and running through October 10, the installation invites visitors to reconsider their relationship with luxury and consumerism while celebrating the rich legacy of the Chanel brand. Sachs declared, "There was no other choice. It had to be Chanel," underscoring the iconic fashion house's significance to his artistic vision.
