Tragedy Strikes as Charred Bodies from Philippine Ferry Fire Arrive for Identification

In a devastating maritime incident, thirty charred bodies recovered from the MV June Aster ferry arrived at the port in Coron, Palawan on Saturday. This tragedy unfolded earlier in the week when a fire broke out on the vessel, which had been carrying 132 passengers and crew, resulting in at least 35 fatalities and leaving more than 50 individuals missing.

The ferry, which had departed from Manila, was nearing its destination when the blaze erupted. Survivors reported that the fire may have originated from the cargo hold, with one witness describing a sudden explosion that sent smoke and flames rapidly engulfing the ship. As investigations continue, authorities are focusing on the actions of the captain, who has reportedly survived but is not accounted for among the listed survivors.

Search and Recovery Efforts Ongoing

Rescue operations are still underway, with coast guard officials indicating that more bodies may still be trapped inside the wreckage. At the Port of Borac, tents were set up to facilitate the grim task of identifying the deceased. Commodore Noemie Cayabyab, a spokesperson for the coast guard, noted that police assistance will be required to help identify the charred remains, as families await news of their loved ones.

Survivors Share Their Harrowing Experiences

Survivors have recounted the chaos that ensued as the fire spread. Arnulfo Nokki Villanueva, one of the passengers, described the scene as pandemonium, with frantic passengers unable to access life jackets amid the chaos. Lira Daco, whose daughter is among the missing, expressed her anguish over the uncertain fate of her child, fearing that she could have suffered in the flames.

The shipping company, Atienza Interisland Ferries Inc., has stated that they are cooperating with authorities and assisting affected families. As the investigation into the cause of the fire and the potential responsibility of the crew progresses, the community remains in mourning, grappling with the aftermath of this maritime disaster.
