Tragic School Fire Claims Lives in Rebel-Controlled Bukavu, Congo

By Editor • September 10, 2026 • 1 min read

A devastating fire in Bukavu, a city in eastern Congo under rebel control, has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 17 lives, including both children and adults. The incident highlights the ongoing dangers faced by communities in conflict zones.

According to local and medical sources, witnesses reported seeing the aftermath of the blaze, with one individual assisting in the transportation of 17 bodies into an ambulance. A nearby health center confirmed receiving 10 victims, while another hospital reported treating over 50 injured students, with 14 succumbing to their injuries.

Corneille Nangaa, the coordinator for the rebel alliance, provided an estimate of approximately 10 fatalities but noted that he did not have an exact count at the time. Bukavu has been under the control of the Rwanda-backed AFC/M23 rebels since last year's rapid offensive in the region, exacerbating the challenges faced by local residents.
