Trump Administration Promises $500 Refunds to Select ACA Enrollees Ahead of Midterms

By Editor • September 10, 2026 • 1 min read

In a move that could impact the upcoming midterm elections, the Trump administration has announced plans to distribute $500 refund checks to approximately 1 million individuals enrolled in Affordable Care Act (ACA) health plans. The checks will begin to be mailed next month, strategically targeting residents in key swing states.

However, the refunds will only be issued to those who do not benefit from federal subsidies for their insurance. This decision effectively excludes millions of ACA participants who rely on these subsidies to afford their health coverage.

The White House characterized the refunds as a necessary support for "Americans most exposed to the higher costs imposed by the Biden administration's gross mismanagement of Obamacare." Critics argue that this initiative highlights the administration's previous actions, including reductions in funding for ACA enrollment assistance and the failure to renew additional subsidies that expired earlier this year.
