In a recent interview with GB News, US President Donald Trump hinted that the United States may not support the United Kingdom in a potential conflict with Argentina over the Falkland Islands. Trump attributed this stance to the UK's lack of involvement in the US's military actions in the Middle East, particularly regarding Iran.
When asked about the UK’s ability to handle a territorial dispute, Trump remarked, “I don’t know if you’re prepared to do that. I just don’t know if you have the capacity to do that.” He reflected on the 1982 Falklands War, recalling that the UK had successfully reclaimed the islands, but suggested that the current military situation is different.
Trump also criticized the UK's response during his administration's conflict in the Strait of Hormuz, expressing disappointment that then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer did not provide naval support. He described the lack of assistance from NATO allies as “pretty sad.”
These comments follow Trump's assertion that he continuously reviews the US policy on the Falklands, hinting at a possible shift if the UK does not increase its defense spending. The British government has reiterated its commitment to the islanders' right to self-determination, who overwhelmingly voted to remain a British territory in a 2013 referendum.
