Tsitsipas Predicts Kyrgios's Ban Was Inevitable

By Editor • September 1, 2026 • 1 min read

Stefanos Tsitsipas has expressed little surprise over Nick Kyrgios's suspension for cocaine use, stating it was "pretty much expected." After defeating Arthur Fils in the first round of the US Open, Tsitsipas remarked, "I am surprised it came so late, though."

Kyrgios faced a positive cocaine test in June during an ATP 250 event in Mallorca and announced his ban in August, describing it as a significant mistake. While he faces a potential four-year suspension, a lighter penalty is anticipated.

During his comments, Tsitsipas revealed he was aware of Kyrgios's situation before the public announcement, mentioning, "I knew about this before the announcement. I kind of expected it, to be honest." The two players have a history, including a contentious match at Wimbledon in 2022, where Tsitsipas labeled Kyrgios a "bully." Kyrgios, reflecting on his challenges, has described feeling "helpless and alone" due to ongoing injuries impacting his career.
