Turkey Expands Crackdown on LGBTQ+ Groups and Online Presence

In a significant escalation of its crackdown on LGBTQ+ communities, Turkey has launched a nation-wide operation targeting a variety of associations, businesses, and individuals. This initiative, named "My Family Is Safe," has already resulted in the detention of 26 suspects across 15 provinces, including major cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir.

Justice Minister Akin Gurlek detailed the operation, which encompasses investigations into alleged prostitution, obscene content, and the seizure of drugs and digital materials. Officials have raised concerns about certain associations receiving substantial funding from abroad, suggesting potential foreign influence on local LGBTQ+ issues. Additionally, prosecutors claim to have uncovered evidence indicating that minors were being guided on topics related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

The crackdown is part of a broader trend of heightened scrutiny and repression of LGBTQ+ rights in Turkey, where authorities have previously banned Pride events and dismantled advocacy groups. This recent operation is set against the backdrop of Turkey's earlier decision, alongside Egypt, to deny entry to a cruise ship carrying over 1,900 LGBTQ+ tourists, citing societal threats.

In conjunction with these actions, a court has mandated the blocking of online accounts and websites linked to 73 LGBTQ+ organizations, reflecting ongoing efforts to control the narrative surrounding LGBTQ+ rights under the guise of maintaining public order. "We will not tolerate any criminal organization, abuse network or illegal activity targeting our young people and families," Gurlek stated, emphasizing the government's stance against what it perceives as threats to societal values.
