Ukraine Calls for Global Ban on Flights in Russian Airspace Amid Safety Concerns

Ukraine has taken a firm stance regarding the safety of air travel in Russian airspace, urging the UN's aviation agency to implement a complete ban on flights over Russia. This call comes in the wake of President Volodymyr Zelensky's alarming statement that the airspace is becoming increasingly unsafe.
Amid ongoing military tensions and a series of intensified strikes on Kyiv, Ukrainian officials announced plans to escalate their retaliation efforts. Zelensky reassured that any military actions would specifically target Russian military facilities while emphasizing that civilian aircraft would not be at risk. However, he noted the significant rise in Ukrainian drone activity over Russian territory.
In a letter addressed to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Chairman Juan Carlos Salazar, Ukrainian Infrastructure Minister Mykola Kalashnyk highlighted the urgent need to minimize potential tragedies in the skies. Ukraine urged ICAO to advocate for its member states to enforce a full prohibition of civil aircraft operations within Russian airspace.
Although European and American airlines have already avoided flying over Russia due to the ongoing conflict, carriers from countries such as China and Turkey continue to operate in that airspace. ICAO acknowledged the heightened risks for civil aircraft and called on nations to enhance protective measures for aviation in conflict zones.
