US Imposes New Sanctions on Iran's Aviation Sector Amid Ongoing Tensions

The United States has intensified its economic campaign against Iran by unveiling a new set of sanctions specifically targeting the nation’s aviation industry. On Tuesday, Treasury officials identified 36 sanctions against various commercial and private airlines associated with Iran, including an expansion of existing measures against Mahan Air. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the seriousness of these actions, warning that entities supporting Mahan Air and similar carriers risk exclusion from the global financial system. 'We promised severe consequences for those providing financial lifelines to the Iranian regime,' Bessent stated.

These sanctions come amidst an ongoing conflict that has seen the US and Israel engage militarily with Iran. President Donald Trump, in office since 2025, has escalated this pressure campaign, referring to his latest measures as an 'economic D-Day.' Despite the sanctions and military actions, tensions remain high, with recent US strikes on Iranian tankers and Iranian attacks on US forces in the region.
