Xiaomi's 18 Fold: A Bold Entry in the Compact Foldable Market
By Editor • September 8, 2026 • 2 min read
Xiaomi has marked its return to the foldable smartphone arena with the launch of its latest device, the Xiaomi 18 Fold. This mid-size flagship foldable arrives just as competitors like Samsung and Apple are intensifying their focus on compact models, positioning Xiaomi strategically in a rapidly evolving market.
Design and Build Quality
Weighing in at 7.73 ounces (219g) and measuring 0.42 inches thick when closed, the Xiaomi 18 Fold boasts a sleek design that feels premium. The matte finish on the back and frame adds an understated elegance, while the rounded corners contribute to its modern aesthetic. Available in four colors—Black, White, Red, and a Ceramic version—the deep red option stands out, echoing the rumored design of Apple's forthcoming foldable device.
Display and User Experience
The device features a 5.38-inch outer display and a 7.58-inch main screen, both designed to share the same aspect ratio for a seamless transition. During the brief hands-on session, the immersive video experience was notable, with fewer black bars compared to traditional foldables. The user interface appeared smooth, with effective split-screen and floating window functionalities, making the unfolded experience resemble that of a small tablet.
Camera and Performance
One of the standout features is the impressive 200MP Leica triple-camera system, which includes a 50MP periscope telephoto lens that provides excellent zoom capabilities. The camera's stability at higher magnifications makes it a compelling option for photography enthusiasts. The design of the camera bump is sleek and well-integrated, ensuring it doesn’t dominate the phone’s overall look.
While my time with the Xiaomi 18 Fold was limited, it showcased a polished return to the foldable market, with a competitive starting price of RMB 10,999 (approximately $1,640). Currently, it will be available exclusively in China, but its potential to compete against established brands like Samsung remains to be seen.
