Google's AI Search Now Featuring Ads: A New Frontier for Advertising

By Editor • May 21, 2025 • 1 min read

In a bold move to integrate advertising into its AI-powered search experience, Google announced on Wednesday its plans for AI Mode. This feature allows users to interact with AI-generated responses and explore follow-up queries, but it will also incorporate ads deemed relevant to users’ needs.

According to Google's blog post, ads could appear under AI Mode responses, suggesting helpful next steps like website builders for users questioning how to develop business ideas. This integration marks a significant step, considering that Google generated a staggering $66.89 billion in ad revenue in the first quarter of 2025 alone.

However, this initiative may not sit well with all users. A recent CivicScience survey revealed that 36% of U.S. adults expressed skepticism about AI in advertising, indicating a reluctance to purchase from brands using AI in their ads. For advertisers, Google has opened the door to those using its Performance Max, Shopping, and Search campaigns, with ads expected to roll out for U.S. users on both desktop and mobile platforms.

Google is not alone in this venture; other tech giants like Microsoft and OpenAI have also toyed with ad integrations in their AI products. Additionally, Google announced the expansion of ads in AI Overviews, further embedding advertising within AI-driven summaries of search queries. As advertisers navigate this evolving landscape, the impact on publishers remains a concern, prompting Google to consider their feedback in its advertising strategies.
