A Dreamy Retreat at Edenhall Estate: My Enchanting Getaway in the Lake District

By Editor • August 21, 2026 • 2 min read

After seven years in the UK, I finally ventured to the picturesque Lake District, lured by an invitation to explore Edenhall Estate. Nestled in Cumbria's Eden Valley, this 1,500-acre estate is a family-run gem with roots dating back over five centuries. The journey from London to Penrith took three hours, but the warm welcome from the estate’s owner made it feel worthwhile.

Edenhall’s main house, resembling something from a Jane Austen novel, stands out with its historic charm and modern comforts. The exterior remains largely untouched, save for some chic new windows, while the interior is a delightful blend of the 1700s and contemporary design. Picture luxurious wallpaper, ornate woodwork, and a Steinway piano—all enhanced by a clock tower crafted by the same foundry responsible for Big Ben.

My friends and I were there for a girls’ getaway, and although the house boasts six bedrooms that can accommodate twelve, we were content to explore its nooks and crannies. The soundproofing was impressive, allowing me to play the piano without disturbing my friends, who enjoyed their time in the kitchen. The estate’s ever-changing weather added to its allure, from sunlit afternoons to misty evenings.

Our stay was marked by both adventure and indulgence. One night, we borrowed a Land Rover to explore the estate and ended up by a serene river, where we toasted with champagne around a campfire. The estate’s private chef, Elliot, was a culinary wizard, creating memorable meals that exceeded our expectations. From the best gluten-free lasagna I’ve ever had to filet mignon paired with Cointreau, every dish was a revelation.

For those who prefer a more hands-off experience, Edenhall offers hotel-like amenities, including a gym and massage services. Meanwhile, we enjoyed the sauna and hot tub, which provided views of Juno, the estate's unofficial pet deer. Our quirky encounters with locals only added to the charm of our stay.

The tranquil atmosphere of Edenhall guaranteed restful nights, a welcome change from sweltering London summers. The beds, ranging from four-poster to antique wicker, were as comfortable as those in a friend’s home. My favorite memory will undoubtedly be waking up to soft morning light, savoring freshly brewed coffee, and stepping onto the cool grass, a simple pleasure that beckons a return visit.
