A24's latest film, 'Tony,' which chronicles the formative years of culinary icon Anthony Bourdain, has made a significant splash in the indie box office, raking in $5 million from 1,652 screens. This impressive opening places it seventh in the weekend box office rankings.
Released on August 7 initially in just six theaters, 'Tony' expanded to 37 locations last weekend, accumulating a total of $6.6 million so far. The film has received favorable reviews and resonates with fans of Bourdain, who passed away in 2018. It captures his journey in Provincetown, where he first discovered his passion for cooking.
Dominic Sessa stars as Bourdain, alongside notable actors including Emilia Jones and Antonio Banderas. Although A24 has not disclosed the film's budget, insiders estimate it to be under $15 million.
This summer has been prosperous for A24, with other successful releases like the comedy 'The Invite' and 'Backrooms.' In contrast, Black Bear's 'The Rivals of Amziah King' struggled, earning only $285,000 in its second weekend.
