Brazil Responds to U.S. Tariffs with Economic Reciprocity Measures

In a bold move, Brazil's government announced on Thursday that it will implement reciprocal measures against the United States following the imposition of additional tariffs by Washington. The tariffs, which went into effect in mid-July, range from 12.5% to 25% on a variety of Brazilian goods.
Under the Economic Reciprocity Law, Brazil aims to counteract the U.S. measures deemed unjustified and arbitrary. The affected Brazilian exports include industrial machinery, sugar, ethanol, wood, and footwear, while key products like meat, coffee, and aviation parts have been exempted from these tariffs.
Brazilian Foreign Affairs Minister emphasized that the government presented evidence refuting claims of unfair trade practices that led to these tariffs. In conjunction with these administrative actions, Brazil has also requested diplomatic consultations with the U.S. to mitigate the impact of the imposed tariffs.
The relationship between the two nations has soured, highlighted by the recent decision from the Trump administration to withdraw the visa of Brazil's ambassador in Washington. Brazil perceives these tariff measures and diplomatic actions as politically motivated attempts by the U.S. to influence the upcoming presidential elections in Brazil.
