Cameroon Claims Historic Win at Women's Africa Cup of Nations

By Editor • August 16, 2026 • 1 min read

In an exhilarating showdown in Rabat, Cameroon triumphed over Malawi 3-0 to secure their first Women's Africa Cup of Nations title on Sunday. The victory marked a significant milestone for the Indomitable Lionesses, who had previously faced disappointment in three finals against Nigeria.

Marie Ngah was the star of the match, scoring two goals, while Naomi Eto added another to seal the win for Cameroon. The team had faced a challenging path to the final, initially failing to qualify for the tournament before being granted a second chance when the number of participating teams expanded from 12 to 16.

Malawi, making their first appearance in the tournament final and ranked 153rd globally, had a fairytale run, defeating several strong teams including Nigeria and Ghana. However, they struggled to capitalize on their opportunities during the final.

Cameroon took control of the match early, with Ngah scoring in the 20th minute after a rebound from a cross hit the crossbar. Eto doubled the lead shortly after, and Ngah netted her second just before halftime, leaving Malawi with a steep hill to climb. Despite their efforts, including a near miss from Temwa Chawinga, the Scorchers could not find the back of the net.

The triumph for Cameroon not only secured their first title but also guaranteed them a spot in the upcoming 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, alongside Malawi, Algeria, and Morocco.
