Canada's Prime Minister Responds with Tariffs After Trade Talks Collapse

In a decisive move following failed trade negotiations, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Saturday the implementation of retaliatory tariffs on the United States. This escalation marks a significant strain in the relationship between the two neighboring countries.

The breakdown of discussions in Washington on Friday led to the introduction of new US tariffs, reaching as high as 50 percent on various goods. These tariffs are expected to affect approximately US$20 billion worth of Canadian exports, accounting for about 5.5 percent of the total exports to the US.
