Charter Completes $34.5 Billion Acquisition of Cox, Transforms into Cable Powerhouse

Charter Communications has finalized its $34.5 billion acquisition of Cox Communications, significantly expanding its reach as the top cable provider in the U.S. With operations now in 45 states, the merged entity serves approximately 37 million customers.

The California Public Utility Commission's approval last week marked the last hurdle in the regulatory process, paving the way for this transformative deal first announced in May 2025. In a notable shift, Charter will rebrand itself as Cox Communications within a year, although services will continue under the Spectrum name.

To welcome new customers, the company is offering a complimentary year of mobile service to Cox internet customers who are not already on Cox Mobile. Starting in mid-September, Spectrum will introduce its full range of products to former Cox markets.

John Malone's Liberty Broadband, which previously held a stake in Charter, is now out of the picture, ceasing to appoint directors to the Charter board. Malone expressed optimism about the merger, emphasizing it creates a stronger entity poised for future innovation.

Charter's president and CEO, Chris Winfrey, highlighted the merger's benefits for customers and employees, promising enhanced service and competitive pricing. In leadership changes, Alex Taylor, formerly of Cox Enterprises, will chair the new board, with Winfrey continuing in his role.
