Christine Vachon Discusses the Joys and Challenges of Producing 'De Noche'

By Editor • August 20, 2026 • 1 min read

At the Edinburgh International Film Festival, renowned indie producer Christine Vachon shared candid insights into the rollercoaster journey of filmmaking. Reflecting on over 30 years in the industry, she likened the role of a film producer to childbirth, emphasizing the need to forget the struggles to continue creating.

Vachon's latest project, 'De Noche,' directed by Todd Haynes, experienced a tumultuous path when Joaquin Phoenix withdrew from the lead role just days before filming. This setback sent the project into disarray, but it was revitalized with Pedro Pascal stepping in, a change Vachon views as a 'happy ending' for the film.

“Everything happens for a reason,” Vachon remarked, noting that while the film's setting shifted from Guadalajara to Mexico City, Pascal's unique interpretation of his character enriched the story. Despite the challenges, Vachon remains passionate about nurturing new talent, exemplified by her work with first-time director Tyler-Marie Evans on 'Pretty Babies.' She emphasized the importance of maintaining enthusiasm and resisting cynicism in a tough industry.

“Young filmmakers tell stories they've longed to share,” Vachon explained, highlighting how their excitement and fearlessness invigorate her work at Killer Films. Their fresh perspectives are what keep the creative spirit alive in an often daunting business.
