In a bold departure from traditional alarm clocks, the CinderClock by Endothermal Systems reimagines the wake-up experience with its impressive 3D-printed design. This standalone device, measuring 140 × 160 × 170 mm, is engineered to minimize smartphone reliance during morning routines, featuring a prominent 100 mm arcade button that makes dismissing alarms a satisfying, tactile experience.

Frustrated by the distraction of smartphones as alarm clocks, the design team set out to create something that embodies three core principles: standalone functionality, a mechanical interface, and modular components. At its heart, the CinderClock employs an ESP32-S3 processor and a DS3231 real-time clock, enabling it to store audio files and perform without any app or subscription.

The CinderClock offers a variety of customizable alarm functions, allowing users to set schedules based on specific weekdays or intervals, all without needing an internet connection. Its intuitive interface translates alarm settings into easy-to-understand language, with a joystick for navigation and a calendar view to keep track of recurring alarms. Snoozing is transformed into a deliberate action, requiring users to engage with the device rather than mindlessly tapping a button.

In addition to its alarm features, the CinderClock serves as a multifunctional tool, incorporating timers, a stopwatch, and even simple games. It can temporarily create a WiFi hotspot for sound transfers, although this connectivity is limited and user-controlled, emphasizing its standalone nature.

Endothermal Systems has taken an unusually transparent approach to the CinderClock's development, openly sharing both successes and challenges faced during prototyping. This dedication to repairability extends beyond marketing, with plans to release detailed documentation, including PCB files and materials lists.
