Colombian President Urges Trump to Lift Tariffs Amid Earthquake Crisis

By Editor • August 16, 2026 • 1 min read

In the wake of a devastating earthquake that claimed nearly 300 lives in western Colombia, President Abelardo de la Espriella has reached out to U.S. President Donald Trump for relief from tariffs imposed on Colombian goods.

Since late July, tariffs on Colombian products have increased from 10 to 12.5 percent, significantly impacting local businesses already suffering after the disaster. De la Espriella expressed his concerns on X, urging for a temporary suspension of these tariffs to alleviate the economic burden on his country.

During a brief conversation with Trump, the Colombian leader received condolences for the earthquake's aftermath, describing the exchange as friendly. De la Espriella noted that he faces substantial challenges in rebuilding Colombia amidst what he termed an 'apocalyptic economic situation.'
