Cumberland Hospital Faces Ongoing Challenges with Patient Escapes

Despite recent efforts to enhance security at Cumberland Hospital, the facility is grappling with a troubling trend of patient absconding incidents. Since February, there have been at least 14 escapes, including two linked to three tragic fatalities.
Brendan Flynn, a senior official from NSW Health, reported during a budget estimates hearing that the current rate of absconding stands at 0.5 incidents per 1,000 bed days, a statistic he emphasized is lower than in other facilities. However, this figure offers little comfort to those affected by the incidents.
The alarming series of events began in February when two patients escaped from the hospital. One of them was involved in a car crash in Camden that resulted in the deaths of two women, while the other allegedly committed a stabbing attack that left one person dead and two critically injured. Following these incidents, Premier Chris Minns expressed concerns, stating that something had "gone badly wrong" within the system.
Flynn outlined the number of absconding incidents over the months, revealing four in March, three in April, and two each in May and June, with another three reported in July. He classified these incidents into two types: "type 1" for unescorted escapes and "type 2" for those occurring during escorted leave with staff.
Shadow Mental Health Minister Sarah Mitchell criticized the lack of significant improvement in the situation, indicating that the government’s reviews did not yield the expected reductions in escapes. She questioned how the system allowed individuals to abscond and perpetrate violent acts.
In response to these security challenges, Mental Health Minister Rose Jackson mentioned that measures such as removing loose furniture and enhancing staff leave protocols had been implemented. Despite these changes, Mitchell remains skeptical and demands to know what further actions will be taken to ensure patient safety and prevent future absconding incidents.
