Cyril Ramaphosa Challenges Impeachment Committee's Evidence Leader Amid Legal Concerns
By Editor • August 19, 2026 • 2 min read
The impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa are taking a contentious turn as he raises objections to the selection of an evidence leader, claiming potential conflicts of interest. The political landscape has become increasingly complicated, and the threat of ongoing litigation looms large over the parliamentary process.
On Wednesday, Ramaphosa formally objected to the appointment of advocate Thandazani Madonsela, citing a history that could suggest bias. In a letter sent just before the impeachment committee met, Ramaphosa expressed concern that Madonsela might hold a grudge against him after he removed her from her role as his representative on the Judicial Service Commission in March 2022. He also pointed to Madonsela's previous legal advice to the ANC regarding impeachment processes as another potential conflict of interest.
While these objections were debated, the committee faced a crucial vote on how to proceed. The ANC members abstained to avoid accusations of hypocrisy, while opposition factions, including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the African Transformation Movement (ATM), dismissed Ramaphosa’s objections, labeling them as attempts to undermine the committee's democratic processes. The chairperson of the impeachment committee, Makashule Gana, urged his colleagues to focus on the legal implications rather than the political ramifications of the objections.
In the midst of this, Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, refuted claims of delaying tactics, suggesting that such criticisms were merely political maneuvers. He pointed out that the impeachment process is inherently political and that the President is entitled to defend his rights within the established legal framework.
The committee's decision to seek legal counsel regarding the evidence leader's appointment has effectively stalled the impeachment process, which could have progressed more swiftly had the appointment been finalized. Currently, public hearings are on hold due to an injunction obtained by Ramaphosa, which has been upheld by the Constitutional Court amid challenges from the EFF and ATM.
As the political climate intensifies, the implications of Ramaphosa’s objections are significant, especially considering the broader context of a coalition government formed after the ANC's diminished parliamentary majority. The impeachment process itself began following revelations of a $580,000 theft from Ramaphosa's Phala Phala game farm, a scandal exposed when former spy chief Arthur Fraser lodged a complaint in June 2022.
As legal disputes intertwine with parliamentary procedures, MPs find themselves navigating a challenging landscape where political interests and constitutional duties collide. The forthcoming meetings of the impeachment committee are set against a backdrop of legal scrutiny and political maneuvering, raising questions about the future of Ramaphosa’s presidency and the integrity of the impeachment process.
