Dr. David Morens, a former senior adviser to Dr. Anthony Fauci, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud the U.S. government by plotting to hide federal records related to COVID-19 research.
Morens is set for sentencing on November 12 by U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis in Greenbelt, Maryland. His actions, which included using a private email account to bypass public records laws, have resulted in charges that could carry a maximum five-year prison sentence.
According to the Justice Department, Morens concealed or destroyed important documents regarding COVID-19 research grants. This case emerged from a House Republican investigation into the pandemic's origins, which scrutinized his email practices. While Morens has accepted responsibility, he previously denied any intent to evade federal transparency laws.
