Freddie Mercury's Costumes to Shine at London's V&A Museum

From October 24, 2026, to January 17, 2027, the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) will showcase an exhibition titled Freddie Mercury | Splendid Things, featuring eight iconic costumes and accessories from the legendary Queen frontman. Developed in collaboration with Mary Austin, Mercury’s long-time confidante and former fiancée, the display will explore the evolution of Mercury's flamboyant stage persona.
The exhibition trail, which is free to the public, will lead visitors through the museum's permanent galleries, connecting Mercury's outfits to its extensive collections in fashion and performance arts. Each stop on the trail highlights a significant moment in Mercury’s career, illustrating how his wardrobe was integral to his performances.
Mercury's famous quote about wanting to be surrounded by “splendid things” serves as the exhibition's theme, underscoring the role of clothing in shaping his public image. The collection ranges from early costumes worn at Queen's debut gigs to the extravagant ‘Mercury Wing’ catsuit from the 1975 A Night at the Opera tour, famously featured in the Bohemian Rhapsody video.
Among the standout pieces is the crown and cloak designed by Diana Moseley for the 1986 Magic Tour, marking Mercury’s last performance with Queen at Knebworth. The exhibition will also showcase his solo work, including the costume from the Made in Heaven music video, juxtaposed against personal items that reveal a more intimate side of the artist.
Renowned designer Tom Piper will create immersive installations that highlight the relationship between costume and performance, ensuring that each piece tells a story of its own. As Mercury's legacy continues to resonate, this exhibition promises to celebrate his enduring impact on music and culture.
