Hakainde Hichilema Secures Second Term as Zambia's President Amid Electoral Controversy

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 2 min read

Lusaka, Zambia – Hakainde Hichilema has been re-elected as president, achieving a decisive victory over his opponent, Brian Mundubile, by over one million votes. The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) confirmed on Tuesday that Hichilema garnered 2,965,326 votes compared to Mundubile's 1,856,217, securing him a second five-year term after his initial win in 2021.

Despite the substantial margin, the election has sparked concerns among the opposition regarding the electoral process and the overall political climate in Zambia. Mundubile's alliance raised issues about voting procedures and result tabulation, while Hichilema's supporters dismissed these claims as unfounded, asserting that the results reflected the public's faith in the government's direction.

Hichilema's new term arrives with heightened expectations, particularly as he aims to fulfill promises of economic recovery and governance reform. His first term was marked by efforts to stabilize an economy burdened with debt, and the upcoming years will test his administration's ability to deliver on broader economic growth, accountability, and national unity.

The significance of copper mining to Zambia's economy cannot be overstated, especially with the metal's increasing demand for electric vehicles and renewable technologies. As the country seeks to boost production and attract investments, many voters are looking for tangible improvements in their daily lives rather than just economic statistics.

Hichilema’s journey to the presidency has been remarkable; he transitioned from years in opposition to leading the nation after defeating former President Edgar Lungu. His United Party for National Development (UPND) focused on economic reforms and job creation, while Mundubile's campaign highlighted rising living costs and dissatisfaction with the current government's progress.

After the election, Mundubile's camp called for a thorough examination of the electoral process, while the European Union Election Observation Mission noted issues of violence, intimidation, and media freedom during the campaign. Notably, the announcement of results was temporarily halted due to security incidents, including attacks on election officials and ballot theft.

Though Hichilema's administration is credited with stabilizing the economy and improving international relations, critics argue that the benefits have not reached many households facing high living costs. As Zambians look forward to a second term, they hope for economic growth that translates into better living conditions.

Elvis Mwape, a taxi driver, expressed optimism for a future where economic growth positively impacts families, while independent MP Vincent Mwale emphasized the need for Hichilema's government to unite the nation and address pressing issues, reinforcing that the recent election is a call for action.
