Hitotomori's Innovative Asuka Home Joins Elite Architecture Directory

By Editor • August 18, 2026 • 1 min read

Emerging Japanese architectural firm Hitotomori, founded by Yoshiaki Nagasaka in 2019, has gained recognition with its recent inclusion in the Wallpaper* Architects Directory 2026. The studio, located in Nara, operates from a renovated 140-year-old machiya building that houses a café, a one-room hotel, and its architectural office.

Nagasaka, who transitioned from a large contractor after nearly three decades, sought creative freedom and a collaborative environment. His design philosophy emphasizes simplicity and a thoughtful use of everyday materials, attracting numerous projects across various sectors.

The highlight of Hitotomori’s recent work is the House in Asuka, a compact 65 m² residence completed in 2024. Nestled in a protected area of Asuka village, the home is partially obscured by a minimalist wooden fence, with only its traditional tiled roof visible. Inside, cedar floors and bespoke furniture create a serene atmosphere, complemented by original concrete tiles in the kitchen.

To maximize space, Nagasaka incorporated small loft areas accessible via staggered stairs and a ladder. Lighting fixtures designed by collaborator New Light Pottery enhance the home’s ambiance. This project exemplifies Hitotomori's commitment to innovative design while maintaining a strong connection to its surroundings.
