Kate Douglass Shatters Own World Record in 50m Freestyle

In a stunning display of speed, Kate Douglass eclipsed her own world record in the women’s 50m freestyle, clocking 23.19 seconds at the Pan Pacific Championships. This marks the second time in one day that the 24-year-old American has set a new benchmark, having previously swum 23.49 in the preliminaries.

Douglass's triumph dethroned her teammate Gretchen Walsh, who finished the evening final in 23.74 seconds, while Australia’s Meg Harris secured third with a time of 23.89 seconds. Notably, Walsh had set the record at 23.55 in June.

After her record-breaking swim, Douglass competed in the 200 breaststroke, finishing second to Canada’s Alexanne Lepage. Douglass touched the wall at 2:22.57, while Lepage won with a time of 2:21.73.

This championship event also saw impressive performances from other competitors, including Yu Yiting from China, who claimed victory in the 200 individual medley, and Jamie Jack from Australia, who won the men’s 50m freestyle.
