Manchester United Signs Carlos Baleba in £70m Deal with Brighton

By Editor • August 25, 2026 • 2 min read

In a significant move for their midfield, Manchester United has secured the services of Cameroon international Carlos Baleba from Brighton in a deal valued at £70 million. The agreement consists of an upfront payment of £65 million, with an additional £5 million contingent on performance-based add-ons. Brighton has also included a sell-on clause in the contract, ensuring they benefit should Baleba's value increase in the future.

At just 22 years old, Baleba has committed to a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option for an extra year. Expressing his enthusiasm, Baleba stated, "It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams. Playing at Old Trafford is always special, but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour." He is particularly eager to learn from manager Michael Carrick, citing Carrick's experience as crucial for his development.

Baleba's arrival follows a disappointing start to the Premier League season for United, who suffered a 2-0 defeat against Hull City. This latest acquisition underscores United's efforts to bolster their midfield after bringing in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa this summer. Baleba had been on United's radar for some time, having previously been pursued near the transfer deadline last season, although negotiations fell through due to Brighton's asking price exceeding £100 million.

Currently recovering from an ankle injury sustained during Brighton's pre-season training, Baleba made 112 appearances for the Seagulls since joining from Lille in 2023, scoring four goals. His performance in the previous season helped Brighton secure an eighth-place finish, qualifying them for the Conference League. United's investment in Baleba raises their summer spending to £153 million as they prepare for a return to the Champions League after a hiatus since the 2023-24 season.

Baleba's playing style is characterized by his strength in possession, speed, and aerial ability, making him an essential addition to United's midfield. His defensive prowess is evidenced by his ranking among Premier League midfielders in key metrics such as possessions won, interceptions, and defensive actions. He averaged 6.7 progressive carries per 90 minutes, indicating his capability to transition play effectively.

While Baleba may not be the primary playmaker, his role is expected to complement the likes of Tielemans, who is more adept at progressive distribution. With his versatility, Baleba could not only anchor the midfield but also push forward, creating opportunities in attack. His potential partnership with Santos or Kobbie Mainoo could establish a more dynamic midfield capable of both defensive solidity and offensive thrust.

As Baleba works his way back to full fitness, his adaptability to Carrick's system will be closely monitored, especially as United looks to enhance their possession play. With his left foot and agility, Baleba is well-positioned to thrive alongside United's creative players, signaling an exciting future for both the player and the club.
