Mass Arrests of Migrants Mark Heightened Security Near Ceuta

By Editor • August 16, 2026 • 1 min read

In a significant crackdown, Moroccan authorities have detained hundreds of migrants attempting to reach Ceuta, the Spanish exclave. On Saturday alone, 294 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were apprehended, alongside 61 Moroccans accused of aiding these migration efforts, according to Moroccan state broadcaster Medi 1 TV.

This wave of arrests follows a harrowing mass crossing two weeks ago, where over 72,000 individuals, driven by dire circumstances and misinformation, sought entry into Ceuta. Tragically, at least 90 lives were lost during these attempts, with human rights organizations suggesting the toll may be even higher.

In light of increased social media calls for mass crossings, both Moroccan and Spanish authorities have intensified border security. Meanwhile, hundreds of migrants staged a protest on a local beach, pleading for asylum from Spanish officials while living in dire conditions. Many expressed their anguish, with one migrant stating, “We’re suffering a lot.” Morocco’s Interior Minister has confirmed that irregular migrants will not be permitted to remain or travel to mainland Spain, adding to the urgency of the situation.
