McDonald's Spicy Chicken McNuggets Make a Fiery Comeback

As the summer season wanes and students head back to school, McDonald's is reviving its Spicy Chicken McNuggets, a fan favorite that first debuted during the pandemic in 2020. These spicy delights, paired with the elusive Mighty Hot sauce, have been a hit, returning to menus multiple times since their initial offering. Their latest arrival comes at a time when competitors, like Burger King, have also revamped their chicken nugget offerings, adding a little extra heat to the fast-food landscape.
The Spicy Chicken McNuggets are marketed as having a "spicy tempura coating made with a blend of aged cayenne and chili peppers." With various spicy items available at McDonald's, including the Spicy McCrispy and Hot 'N Spicy McChicken, the question arises: do the Spicy Chicken McNuggets still hold their own in this spicy lineup?
To find out, a reviewer from Tasting Table ventured to a McDonald's in Wildwood, New Jersey, to sample these nuggets firsthand. The anticipation mounted as they ordered a 20-piece box, along with regular McNuggets and a Spicy Snack Wrap for comparison. Unfortunately, the location ran out of the Mighty Hot sauce, leaving the Spicy McNuggets to shine on their own.
Upon opening the box, the reviewer found the nuggets to be a vibrant orange-brown, reminiscent of Halloween treats rather than the typically golden McNuggets. Each piece carried a familiar weight and was coated in a seasoning that left an orange stain on their fingers. A bite revealed the classic McNugget crunch, followed by a juicy, tender interior. The initial spice was mild, building gradually with each nugget consumed, but never reaching an alarming level of heat.
After the initial taste test, the reviewer attempted to enhance the experience with various sauces. While ranch and Caesar dressings failed to elevate the spice, the nuggets finally ignited when dipped in the iconic Spicy Buffalo sauce. The same was true for regular McNuggets, proving that this sauce could elevate the flavor of any chicken piece.
In comparison, the Spicy Snack Wrap, which features a spicy chicken tender in a tortilla, delivered a much more intense flavor experience. The wrap's sauce was described as powerful enough to steal the spotlight, leaving the Spicy Chicken McNuggets feeling somewhat overshadowed.
Despite their enjoyable flavor, the Spicy Chicken McNuggets may not be the standout option on McDonald's menu. The reviewer concluded that while they are indeed good, the competition from other spicy offerings, particularly the Spicy Snack Wrap, makes it hard to justify their enthusiasm for these nuggets. Nevertheless, customers can look forward to the official return of the Spicy Chicken McNuggets, alongside the Mighty Hot Sauce, starting September 1 at participating locations nationwide, available for a limited time only.
Customers can order these spicy bites in various sizes, ranging from 4 to 40 pieces, with prices varying by location. At the Wildwood site, prices ranged from $3.49 for a 4-piece to $13.99 for a 40-piece box. Each 6-piece order contains 290 calories, with a mix of seasonings that set them apart from the regular nuggets.
