Newsom Advocates for Paramount Merger Settlement Talks Amid Antitrust Concerns

By Editor • August 21, 2026 • 1 min read

California Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed his support for ongoing settlement discussions regarding the antitrust lawsuit aimed at blocking the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger. During a press conference in San Francisco, Newsom highlighted comments made by Attorney General Rob Bonta earlier this week, indicating a preference for resolution outside of the courtroom.

“I think there’s some universal sentiment there,” Newsom remarked, acknowledging the complexities involved in reaching a satisfactory agreement. He assured that negotiations are actively taking place, stating, “That’s a process that’s unfolding, I assure you, in real time.” Newsom emphasized the importance of considering the coalition of states involved in the lawsuit, which includes twelve other states alongside California.

His comments come after reports suggested his apprehension about the lawsuit's implications on employment within the state. Addressing a recent warning from David Ellison, CEO of Paramount Skydance, about potential relocations of studios if the matter isn’t resolved by October, Newsom remarked, “I take it seriously,” while expressing hope that such actions would not materialize.
