Pallister Stuns Ledecky; Douglass Shatters 50m Freestyle Record at Pan Pacs

The 2026 Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California, provided a stunning upset as Australian swimmer Lani Pallister triumphed over American superstar Katie Ledecky in the 800-meter freestyle, marking Ledecky’s first loss in this event at a major international competition. Pallister led from start to finish, clocking in at 8:06.1, while Ledecky finished just behind her at 8:07.26.

This remarkable race highlighted the shifting dynamics in women’s distance swimming, with Pallister, who had previously secured victories in the 200m and 400m freestyle during the week, proving that young talent is ready to challenge established greats. In other events, Australian Jamie Jack clinched gold in the men’s 50m freestyle, while compatriot Zac Stubblety-Cook took home the title in the men’s 200m breaststroke.
