Panama Canal to Limit Daily Traffic Amid Drought Conditions

By Editor • August 31, 2026 • 1 min read

In response to severe drought conditions, the Panama Canal will implement a significant reduction in daily vessel transits starting September 3. The daily limit will decrease from 38 to 34 vessels, and further drop to 32 vessels by September 15.

This decision comes as authorities report a troubling 34% decline in rainfall since May, along with a staggering 44% decrease in water inflows to the canal's basin, both attributed to the impacts of El Niño. In total, approximately 5% of global maritime trade relies on this crucial waterway.
