Power Restoration Delayed for Thousands in Indiana Following Severe Storms

More than a week after devastating storms swept through northwest Indiana, approximately 75,000 residents remain without electricity, particularly in Lake County. Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO) has deployed crews around the clock to address the outages, yet many, including over 20,000 in Gary, face a long wait for power restoration, with full service not expected until August 25.
The storms, which brought winds reaching 99 mph, caused significant damage, necessitating the repair or replacement of around 300 utility poles in Gary alone. NIPSCO's executive, Melody Birmingham, described the situation as a “real burden” for affected families, many of whom are struggling with food spoilage and extreme heat.
Local resident Jeremy Spurrier shared the challenges of living without power, relying on an expensive generator to keep food supplies and insulin safe. Meanwhile, frustrations have arisen in Gary, a majority-Black city, where some residents feel overlooked in the restoration efforts. Birmingham, addressing concerns about equity, emphasized that the restoration issues are not limited to specific demographics but affected diverse areas.
City officials, including Gary Mayor Eddie Melton, acknowledged the residents' exhaustion and frustration but reassured them that over 600 linemen are actively working on repairs. The aftermath of the storms has claimed the lives of seven individuals, highlighting the severe impact of the disaster on the community.
