Ratko Mladic, Infamous 'Butcher of Bosnia,' Passes Away in Detention

Ratko Mladic, the notorious former Bosnian Serb military leader known as the "Butcher of Bosnia," has died, according to Serbian state broadcaster RTS. He was serving a life sentence at The Hague for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, where 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were brutally executed.

Mladic's health had deteriorated significantly in recent months, suffering from multiple strokes. Despite appeals from Serbian officials and his family for his release on health grounds, the Hague tribunal denied such requests. He had been sentenced for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity following a protracted trial that concluded with his conviction in 2017.

During the Bosnian War from 1992 to 1995, which resulted in approximately 100,000 deaths and 2.2 million displaced individuals, Mladic was a key figure in a campaign aimed at ethnic cleansing to establish a "Greater Serbia." His actions culminated in the Srebrenica atrocity, considered Europe's worst massacre since World War II.

After being indicted in 1995, Mladic evaded capture for 16 years, living in relative comfort in Serbia. However, following the fall of Slobodan Milosevic in 2000, pressure mounted for his arrest, which finally occurred in May 2011. Throughout his trial, Mladic maintained his innocence, frequently denouncing the court as biased.

Despite his conviction, Mladic retained a following in Serbia, where some viewed him as a protector of the Serbian people. His defense team had recently argued for his release on humanitarian grounds, citing his terminal health conditions. Mladic's legacy remains deeply divisive, with many viewing him as a symbol of evil, while others continue to honor him.
