Record-Breaking El Nino Expected to Heat Up 2027

By Editor • August 22, 2026 • 1 min read

The Met Office has issued a stark warning about an unprecedented El Nino weather pattern set to influence global temperatures significantly. According to the U.K.'s national weather agency, this El Nino, forecasted to peak at over 3 degrees Celsius above average, could lead to 2027 becoming the hottest year on record.

Adam Scaife, the head of long-range forecasting at the Met Office, detailed the extraordinary nature of this event, stating, "We are expecting the biggest El Nino for over a century, peaking at something over three degrees - that is unheard of in modern climate records." Currently, Pacific waters are already approximately 2.6 degrees Celsius above the 30-year average, and projections suggest a peak anomaly of 3.9 degrees Celsius this November.

El Nino phenomena occur when sea surface temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific rise significantly, affecting global weather patterns. While this event is part of a natural cycle, climate change is amplifying its effects, contributing to ongoing stresses caused by recent heatwaves in Europe. Scaife noted, "We should be clear that this is an unprecedented event," further emphasizing the likely severe impacts, including droughts in regions like South America and heightened rainfall in the U.K. this autumn.

Nick Dunstone, another Met Office scientist, stated that if these predictions hold true, 2026 will surpass previous El Nino experiences, leading to a global temperature increase that may push 2027 ahead of 2024 as the warmest year recorded. The potential for extreme weather across various regions underscores the seriousness of these forecasts, with impacts expected to be felt worldwide.
