Shailene Woodley Reflects on Losing Mary Jane Role in 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2'

Shailene Woodley recently opened up about her disappointment over being cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, where she was cast as Mary Jane Watson. During a conversation with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, the actress recounted her initial excitement about landing the role, describing Spider-Man as her favorite superhero and Mary Jane as her childhood favorite character.

Woodley filmed several scenes alongside Andrew Garfield, who portrayed Peter Parker, but learned a year later that her parts had been scrapped. "They told me, ‘You’re not in the movie anymore,’ and I was shocked," she recalled. The decision was attributed to the introduction of new characters and a focus on Peter’s relationship with Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone.

Director Marc Webb previously explained that the film's narrative needed to be streamlined, which led to the omission of Woodley’s scenes. Despite the disappointment, Woodley humorously speculated whether her performance might have influenced the decision, acknowledging that the truth remains unclear.

Ultimately, plans for a third installment in the series were abandoned after the film's lackluster performance, leaving Woodley’s portrayal of Mary Jane unrealized.
