STAT Strengthens Commitment to Trust in Science with New Initiative

By Editor • August 19, 2026 • 1 min read

In a world increasingly marred by misinformation and a crisis of trust in science, STAT has launched a new initiative aimed at restoring confidence in scientific reporting. Since its inception over a decade ago, STAT has been dedicated to providing "trusted, tough-minded journalism," a mission that has taken on new significance in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To tackle the pressing issues surrounding public trust, STAT has appointed Nicholas Florko as their new trust-in-science reporter. Florko, who previously reported for STAT and The Atlantic, has a history of investigative journalism that includes critical coverage of food safety failures and healthcare injustices affecting incarcerated individuals. He aims to delve into the origins and spread of misinformation, emphasizing the need for compassion in understanding differing viewpoints on science, particularly regarding vaccine hesitancy.

Florko stated, "I want to explore the origins of misinformation, how it spreads, and what can be done to counter it." His insights will be complemented by additional reporting and essays focused on issues of trust, supported by various foundations. This initiative will also be a central topic at the upcoming STAT Summit in Boston on October 14-15, where Florko and other esteemed reporters will engage with influential figures in science and policy.
