Testing Claude's Email Skills: A Personal Experiment

By Editor • August 20, 2026 • 2 min read

In an era where artificial intelligence is increasingly encroaching on our professional tasks, I decided to explore the capabilities of Claude, an AI chatbot, specifically its ability to manage emails. As someone who spends a considerable amount of time sifting through and responding to emails, the prospect of automating this task was intriguing. Could Claude really lighten my workload, or would it prove to be more trouble than it’s worth?

To utilize Claude for email management, one must subscribe to a paid plan, costing around $20 per month. Once that hurdle is crossed, connecting Claude to a Gmail account is straightforward: a few clicks in the settings section, and you're set. The AI is capable of summarizing emails and drafting replies based on prompts, allowing users to manage their inboxes more efficiently.

The initial test involved giving Claude permission to draft and send emails without prior approval. My first assignment was to engage in an email exchange with myself using a second email account. Claude quickly navigated my inbox, identifying emails and responding accurately. However, a peculiar quirk emerged when it signed off with "cheers," a phrase I rarely use. This highlighted a potential issue: while Claude can draft messages, it may not always align with the user's unique communication style.

Throughout the experiment, Claude performed admirably in drafting responses and summarizing emails. It adeptly understood various attributes of the emails, such as labels and themes, and could generate responses that included specific questions and summaries of my work. Despite its technical prowess, I found myself reluctant to fully embrace the AI's capabilities for drafting emails.

The crux of my hesitation stems from the realization that while Claude may be efficient, it lacks the personal touch that human communication demands. The fear of errors—misinterpretations or inaccurate responses—looms large, making me question whether handing over email drafting to AI is truly wise. Moreover, the thought of an endless cycle of AI-generated emails raises concerns about authenticity in communication.

Ultimately, while Claude's features for searching and summarizing emails might remain beneficial, I plan to disable its drafting and sending ability for the foreseeable future. Communication is a personal endeavor; for now, I prefer to keep it that way.
