Early Sunday morning, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake jolted Tokyo and the eastern Kanto region at 2 a.m. The quake's epicenter was located in southern Ibaraki Prefecture, striking at a depth of 70 kilometers.
In Tokyo's Adachi Ward, tremors peaked at intensity level lower 5 on Japan’s seismic scale, with similar levels felt across Ibaraki, Saitama, and Chiba prefectures. Other areas of Tokyo experienced level 4 shaking, while Tochigi, Gunma, and Kanagawa also reported significant tremors.
Long-period ground motion was noted in Kawaguchi, Urayasu, and parts of Tokyo, causing potential instability in high-rise buildings. Authorities are currently assessing the situation for injuries or damage, with reports of a ruptured water pipe in Koto Ward, though its connection to the quake remains unconfirmed.
