Indonesia Hit by 6.0 Magnitude Earthquake Amidst Series of Tremors

On August 16, 2026, the Minahassa Peninsula in Indonesia experienced a significant earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale. The quake struck the Gulf of Tomini at 21:55 IST, with a depth of 68 kilometers, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences and the National Center for Seismology.
This earthquake follows a tumultuous day for Indonesia, as a 7.7 magnitude quake earlier that morning resulted in over 40 fatalities. Just hours before the Minahassa earthquake, another tremor of 6.5 magnitude rattled the region.
In response to the seismic activity, authorities initially issued a tsunami warning, urging residents near the coast to evacuate to higher ground. However, this warning was later retracted after assessments showed no significant sea-level changes that would threaten coastal communities, although minor tsunamis were reported.
