Tragedy Strikes as Ferry Capsizes off Northern Cyprus, Seven Confirmed Dead

In a devastating maritime incident, at least seven individuals lost their lives when a ferry carrying nearly 270 passengers capsized off the northern coast of Cyprus on Sunday, August 30, 2026. Turkish media reports indicate that 237 people were rescued, while a search is ongoing for 24 others still unaccounted for.
The ferry, which set sail from Kyrenia (Girne) towards Turkey’s Tasucu port, encountered severe weather conditions shortly after departure. Northern Cyprus Prime Minister Unal Ustel revealed that the vessel began taking on water just 15 minutes into its journey.
According to local officials, the catamaran-style ferry sank approximately 7.5 kilometers (4 nautical miles) from the coast, near Diana beach. Eyewitness footage has shown survivors wearing life vests amidst the wreckage.
