A young girl is currently in critical condition in the hospital following a tragic incident off the coast of Shoreham-by-Sea that resulted in the deaths of three family members. On Tuesday afternoon, emergency services received reports of four individuals struggling in the water, prompting an immediate response from Sussex Police, RNLI, and HM Coastguard.
The victims, who have not yet been publicly identified, include a man, a woman, and a teenage girl. It is believed that the family had ventured into the water for a swim when the tragedy struck. Local authorities confirmed that the next of kin were notified and are receiving support from specialized officers.
Joss Loader, a representative from the Shoreham Beach Residents’ Association, expressed the community's shock over the incident, underscoring the close-knit nature of the area. “There’s just a really strong sense of shock,” Loader stated, reflecting the disbelief that often accompanies such sudden tragedies.
Emergency responders were dispatched around 2:40 PM, as witnesses reported seeing multiple ambulances and air ambulances near the shoreline. Chief Superintendent James Collis provided details about the rescue efforts, noting that despite the best efforts of the paramedics, three members of the family were pronounced dead at the scene. The surviving girl was immediately transported to the hospital.
Local resident accounts revealed that the family had been camping near the harbor front, which is not a common practice in the area. One anonymous witness remarked on the unusual camping situation, saying that they had seen the family living in tents for the past couple of weeks.
Shoreham-by-Sea, a coastal town popular among families and day-trippers, is known for its recreational water activities. However, locals like 81-year-old Anna Peacock cautioned against the dangers of swimming in the area, especially concerning riptides that can catch swimmers off guard. “It’s very inviting to come to the sea,” she warned, “but the tide could carry you out in seconds.”
In the wake of the incident, East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tom Rutland expressed his condolences on social media, sharing his sorrow over the loss and hoping for the recovery of the young girl still in critical condition.
