Yayoi Kusama, the iconic avant-garde artist from Japan, has passed away at the age of 97 in Tokyo. Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Kusama's artistic journey began in childhood, evolving into a career marked by bold exploration of infinity and self.
After relocating to New York in 1957, she became a pivotal figure in art, influencing minimalist and Pop Art movements through her striking installations, including the renowned Infinity Mirror Rooms. Her playful polka dots and pumpkin motifs captivated audiences globally.
Despite her success, Kusama returned to Japan in 1973, disheartened by the appropriation of her work by male contemporaries like Andy Warhol. Even while living in a psychiatric hospital from the late 1970s, she remained devoted to her craft, continuing to paint until her final moments.
