Yoon Ahn Reimagines Barbie as a Futuristic Humanoid

By Editor • August 31, 2026 • 1 min read

Yoon Ahn, the creative force behind Ambush, may not have played with Barbie dolls extensively in her childhood, but her innovative spirit found early expression through her Lego sets. Yet, it was her playful manipulation of Barbie’s looks—chopping hair and altering outfits—that foreshadowed her future as a boundary-pushing designer.

When approached by Mattel three years ago to create her own version of Barbie, Ahn sought to reflect her brand’s ethos in a non-traditional form. “I wanted to leave a stamp that reflects the world-building we’ve done as a brand,” she stated during a Zoom interview from Tokyo. The result? Prototype 001, a bold reinterpretation of Barbie featuring a striking hime haircut, a pink headset, and silver armor, accompanied by a cyborg cat.

Drawing influences from anime, sci-fi, and visionary artist Mariko Mori, Ahn’s creation delves into themes of technology and humanity. “In the history of Mattel, it’s probably the first humanoid Barbie,” she noted. Ahn acknowledges the evolution of toys from simple figures to complex humanoids, pondering their role in children’s lives and the potential for positive engagement.

Concluding her vision, Ahn expressed, “It’s optimism for futurism,” highlighting her belief in the positive possibilities of integrating technology into play.
