The tragic capsizing of a ferry on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe has resulted in a confirmed death toll of 68, following the recovery of additional bodies over the weekend, officials reported.
The incident occurred on August 11, 2026, when the overloaded vessel, operated by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA), overturned in turbulent waters. Despite being licensed to carry 90 passengers, the ferry was found to be carrying 114 adults, five crew members, and an unknown number of children.
Rescue efforts have managed to save 77 individuals, while a memorial service was held for the victims in Kariba, approximately 400 kilometers from Harare. Survivors recounted their desperate pleas for the captain to return to shore as the ferry began taking on water shortly after departure.
