Bangladesh President Advocates for Resolution of Issues with India

In a significant diplomatic move, Bangladesh's President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized the necessity of swiftly addressing outstanding issues with India during a recent meeting with Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi on September 8, 2026. This meeting marks Trivedi's first official engagement with Alamgir since he assumed the presidency on August 21.
During their discussion at Bangabhaban, Alamgir highlighted the deep historical and cultural ties that bind India and Bangladesh. He stressed that a strong bilateral partnership would benefit both nations, focusing on mutual interests and respect. "If we resolve matters of mutual interest through fair and mutually acceptable solutions, we can enhance trust and confidence between our peoples," Alamgir stated, underscoring the importance of collaboration in achieving peace and prosperity.
Alamgir further urged India to ensure an equitable sharing of water resources, particularly concerning the Ganges and Teesta rivers. He expressed Bangladesh's commitment to fostering a respectful and mutually beneficial relationship while maintaining national dignity. In response, High Commissioner Trivedi assured that India values its relationship with Bangladesh and is actively working on strengthening cooperation across various sectors, including trade, connectivity, and cultural exchange.
