In an intriguing development, Kura Oncology has spun off a new biotech firm, Caspian Therapeutics, to explore the potential of menin inhibitors in treating diabetes. This initiative follows a discovery that targeting the menin protein not only inhibits leukemia cell growth but also has a positive effect on blood sugar regulation.
With a strong backing of $50 million in initial funding, primarily from BVF Partners, Eli Lilly, and Kura's leadership, Caspian Therapeutics aims to propel its lead small molecule drug into early-phase clinical trials specifically for diabetes. Alongside this candidate, the financing will also aid in the development of a second treatment option.
Kura Oncology will maintain a significant stake in Caspian, holding about 50% ownership. The new company's board will be chaired by Kura CEO Troy Wilson, while Robert Spencer, the former CEO of Neurommune Therapeutics and seasoned drug discovery expert from Merck, will assume the role of CEO at Caspian.
