China Implements Major Visa Fee Hike for Japanese Travelers

In a significant policy shift, China is set to dramatically increase visa fees for Japanese visitors, raising costs to approximately seven times their current rates. This change will apply to applications submitted starting Monday, as confirmed by the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo.
The new fee structure will see single-entry visas soar from ¥2,250 to ¥16,750, while double-entry visas will rise from ¥3,750 to ¥25,100. This adjustment comes on the heels of Japan's decision to elevate its own visa fees for foreign nationals back in July.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that this fee increase aligns with the principle of reciprocity between the two nations. Notably, in November 2024, China resumed short-term visa waivers for Japanese citizens, allowing stays of up to 30 days without a visa for tourism purposes.
