Clippers Hit with $40 Million Penalty Following Salary Cap Violations

By Editor • September 3, 2026 • 2 min read

The LA Clippers have found themselves in hot water after the NBA imposed a hefty $40 million fine due to violations of salary cap regulations, particularly concerning the contract of star player Kawhi Leonard. In addition to the monetary penalties, Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has been suspended for a year, and several high-ranking officials within the organization have also faced disciplinary actions.

The sanctions were announced on Wednesday, culminating from a prolonged investigation that began in September 2025. The probe centered around a controversial $28 million endorsement deal between Leonard and Aspiration Fund Adviser LLC, a company that recently filed for bankruptcy. Kawhi Leonard himself has received a fine of $700,000, while Lawrence Frank, the president of basketball operations, and Gillian Zucker, the president of business operations, have been suspended for six months and one year, respectively.

In a strong response to the ruling, the Clippers have expressed their determination to fight the penalties, stating that they "vehemently reject" the findings of the NBA. They argue that the investigation was biased and that the league's actions were inconsistent with the standards of fairness that Commissioner Adam Silver had promised at the investigation's outset.

Ballmer's attorney, David Kelley, has labeled the investigation a "witch hunt," asserting that it failed to adhere to due process and that no league rules were violated regarding the endorsement deal. Kelley emphasized that both league counsel and federal authorities recognized Ballmer as a victim of fraudulent activities, not an accomplice.

In a statement, Leonard expressed regret for the situation, accepting responsibility for lapses in judgment that occurred within his inner circle. He maintained that he entered into his contract with the Clippers in good faith, unaware of any intent to breach salary cap rules.

The NBA's findings suggest that Leonard pressured the Clippers to assist him in securing off-court income opportunities, which were deemed impermissible under league rules. The investigation's conclusions have placed the Clippers under a stringent compliance and monitoring program for the next five years, alongside a ban on Leonard's former business manager from engaging with NBA teams for the same duration.

As the Clippers prepare to navigate the aftermath of this ruling, they face the challenge of maintaining their competitive edge amidst these heavy penalties. Leonard's future with the team remains uncertain, as trade discussions with the Toronto Raptors have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. However, Leonard himself has expressed a desire to return to Toronto, where he previously secured an NBA championship.

In light of these developments, the Clippers' management is under pressure to rectify their organizational practices to avoid further sanctions in the future. The league has made it clear that the severity of the penalties reflects the seriousness of the violations, leaving the Clippers with a steep hill to climb as they seek to restore their reputation.
